Mattress Firm chose tvsdesign to help consolidate two corporate locations into one in southwest Houston, Texas. The decision to consolidate headquarters was spurred by Mattress Firm’s fast-paced growth, along with a strategy to align the company’s brand identity with its organizational culture.
Design that reflects culture
Each design feature in the new HQ was deliberately chosen to reflect Mattress Firm’s culture. The 130,000-square-foot space, aptly named, “BEDQuarters,” is located at 10201 S. Main St. It features a statement lobby with bed coils adorning the front desk, dreamy, cloud-like pendants hanging from the ceiling, and wayfinding signage inspired by the company’s Comfort by Color theme – a subtle nod to the industry for visitors and Mattress Firm team members alike. Abundant collaboration spaces include a coffee shop and an on-site café that provides ample opportunities for employees to congregate and work together.
“It was important that we include lots of collaborative spaces for work and fun,” said tvsdesign President Janet Simpson. “These areas create organic opportunities for staff to enjoy their work alongside colleagues, creating the kind of culture Mattress Firm already has, one that prioritizes the wellbeing of their people. It’s a contagiously fun space.”
This workplace is what dreams are made of
Before beginning the project, tvsdesign and Mattress Firm embarked on an intense discovery phase, in which 300 employees provided feedback on what what they would like to see in the new corporate campus based on space requirements, work habits, culture and amenities.
“Our new BEDQuarters is a celebration of our brand and encompasses the culture our employees have created,” said Karrie Forbes, COO of Mattress Firm. “The progressive design of the space is meant to inspire creativity while also increasing productivity.”
That feedback guided tvsdesign in creating a modern workspace with ample amenitites that support the company’s goal of continuing to attract top talent. Staff can enjoy ping pong tables, a library, indoor swings, arcade games, nap rooms and even free soft serve ice cream 24/7.
“Mattress Firm’s intentional approach to discovering what their associates wanted in this new workplace was essential to this project’s success,” said Simpson. “We began the project with a 10-week Vision phase to get to know their culture firsthand, and the final product is a clear reflection of Mattress Firm’s dedication to growth.”
“As our company continues to evolve and grow, our new space leaves plenty of room for creativity and collaboration to lead the way,” said Forbes.
Project planning and visioning began September 2015, only a year before Mattress Firm associates moved into the space.
