As a venue of learning for all undergraduate students at the University of Georgia, the Science Learning Center showcases collegiate science for majors and non-majors and highlights, in an experiential way, the interdisciplinary nature of science education as a whole. Prescribing to Project Kaleidoscope’s philosophy of putting science on display, anchor venues are located where students will be exposed to biology, plant biology, physics, and general and organic chemistry through windowed laboratory corridors and exterior spaces. The building also features open, collaborative, student-directed spaces throughout to enhance student/faculty interaction, science exposure and interest. In addition to its 33 labs, the building also houses two 280-seat lecture halls, two 72-seat SCALE-UP classrooms, enclosed teaching assistant/group study rooms, and offices for lab managers and coordinators. The Center’s exterior is designed in keeping with UGA’s Campus Design Guidelines and reflects the campus’ classical brick and limestone aesthetic. The interior is programmed and designed for efficient laboratory operation and includes multiple student-controlled collaborative learning spaces with extended hours, so that this science building can serve as the living/learning part of campus that the University desired.
