TVS was asked to develop concept design options and programming for an aquarium to be located at Xanadu Mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Client expectations stated the desire for a highly themed facility with an exhibit program worthy of national recognition. The aquarium was similarly conceived as a destination for approximately three million visitors a year. The overall image of the Meadowlands Aquarium follows the form of a “cresting wave.” The impressive height of this signature design element will be seen from great distances and clearly symbolize the aquatic nature of the structure. The “wave form” continues across the elevation to create a series of curving surfaces that can be dramatically lit and provide opportunities for balconies and glazed openings. The coloration of the primary mall elevations set the stage for a harmonious transition to the aquarium’s wave theme.
