Mattress Firm, a high-growth retailer based in Houston, needed to consolidate two locations that housed their corporate employees into one location. With an average double-digit predicated annual growth, the alignment of Mattress Firm’s brand identity and organizational strategy with a strong real estate strategy was vital to achieving the organizations’ goals for success. With the direction of Steve Stagner, Mattress Firm’s former CEO, to “make it easier to get things done,” the TVS team designed the building to enhance productivity, providing a reflective, collaborative space, with the capacity to expand and support the growing Mattress Firm community. Mattress Firm chose to pursue a corporate campus, instead of a typical corporate workplace structure, that showcased the company’s vibrant culture as part of Mattress Firm’s brand. Leveraged as a strategic partner, the team at TVS equipped the MFRM leadership with the confidence to move forward with short and long-term plans for their new space, starting with an intense discovery period. Working with Mattress Firm, the TVS team engaged in a 10-week Vision, Concept Strategy phase with the goal of identifying aspirations, vision, opportunities, cost and priorities for the new work environment. To begin to understand each department’s workplace requirements, habits and processes, TVS conducted workshops with the leadership team at Mattress Firm and then issued a survey to every employee capturing preferences for space requirements, culture and work habits and amenities. Over 300 responses greatly influenced the vision and workplace strategy that resulted in the final plans for Mattress Firm’s new office.
