Georgia Gwinnett College, Georgia’s first four year college to be founded in the 21st century, has grown at a tremendous pace since opening its doors in 2006. The School of Health Sciences' addition to the 200 acre campus aided in a 19% increase in enrollment, the institution of a new nursing degree, and the support of scientific disciplines.
The building has been designed and sited to enhance the master plan of the campus by enclosing the central ‘quad’ and, by virtue of its curved north façade, opened a pedestrian axis to the east. This greenway axis establishes the spine for future campus building development. The design of the facility incorporated materials that blend with and complement existing campus structures consistent with the campus master plan, and integrated physically and functionally with the previously completed first phase instructional lab facility on the campus quad.
The School of Health Sciences is designed for efficiency and science self-promotion. A central prep lab space serves all laboratories on the floor safely and effectively with only two lab technicians. Windows from corridors into its 25 labs put science on display (following Project Kaleidescope) and bring daylight into the heart of the building to create an uplifting environment.
Student collaborative spaces are placed at circulation intersections and overlook view sites in the plan, thus encouraging opportunities for interaction and learning.
The School of Health Sciences supports GGC’s students with biology, physics and chemistry labs, an exercise science lab, nursing labs, lab preparation facilities, storage facilities, classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, and computer labs. It further serves faculty through open and closed administrative offices, a dean’s suite, conference rooms, and flexible administrative workspaces.
