CAIRO FESTIVAL CITY
ABOUT THE PROJECT
At the heart of this new district is the proposed multiple hotel and villa complex. The project consists of a luxury and a business hotel with a gracious amenities program and 18 upscale residential units. The planning of the complex facilitates connections to nearby retail and entertainment venues and responds to the existing context by reinforcing geometries and axial relationships. Two design approaches are being studied, both of which are inspired by the culture and history of one the most unique places in the world. The Nile River is both a physical and symbolic icon that is intertwined into all aspects of life for this city. Aspects of this natural wonder are reinterpreted into built form in the first of two proposed solutions. The form of the building, the enclosure system, and shading devises all take on the character of the great river and things associated with the river like the papyrus, the unique sailing vessels, and the sand dunes that it carves through. The Arabian lantern is the source of inspiration for the second strategy. Like the Nile, this lantern has cultural and historical significance, which readily associated with this region of the world. The ornamental patterns punched into these relics are also regionally based and culturally important. The patterning of the proposed building scrim is based in the local style and punctuated with a series of slots intended to suggest the cadence of ancient hieroglyphics.
