Mall Plaza’s new retail destination, Plaza Egaña, is redefining the urban shopping experience in Latin America.
Drawing directly from the local culture in Santiago, tvsdesign created the new 98,800 sm retail destination designed to recapture the role of the community’s “central marketplace.” With careful placemaking, the surrounding urban community was not only retained, but enhanced.
Mall Plaza Egaña is one of four retail destinations tvsdesign is creating for developer and mall operator, Mall Plaza, which will set a new standard for the urban retail experience in Chile. As tvsdesign Principal Mark Carter explains, Mall Plaza has a “strategic vision to redefine both their brand and the customer’s shopping experience as the most progressive in Latin America”.
As strategic designers who understand the business of retail placemaking, Carter and his design team planned Plaza Egaña for urbanity. The four level urban infill project includes a mix of merchandise ranging from service retail and hypermarket in the subterranean transit level to the atrium and three upper levels with higher end retail stores.
Lining the street and plaza gardens are sidewalk cafes, restaurants and an amphitheater that create an entertainment district with a Bohemian atmosphere. Cinemas, food court and family restaurants anchor a rooftop garden with dramatic views to downtown Santiago and the mountains beyond.
In addition to making the retail center contextual and in harmony with its urban surroundings, Mall Plaza also challenged tvsdesign to create a project that would be a physical public statement of the importance of sustainability. The company signed an agreement with Fundación Chile to measure the carbon footprint/greenhouse gas emissions during construction, the first mall project in Chile to undertake these efforts.
