Spotlight On: Marriott Marquis Washington D.C.



tvsdesign and Cooper Carry have once again partnered to bring a great neighbor to the Washington Convention Center, located in the District of Columbia.

“For some time, we have worked diligently to bring a world-class hotel to the Convention Center that will spur development and offer new jobs for District residents.  [The] new state-of-the-art Marriott Marquis brings approximately 1,600 construction jobs, and when the hotel opens, offers more than 1,000 jobs for District residents in the hospitality industry,” said Washington D.C. Mayor, Adrian M. Fenty.

The 1,000,000 gsf hotel features:

  • 1,170 guestrooms on fourteen floors above the lobby
  • Over 100,000 sf of meeting and assembly space
  • Five food and beverage outlets
  • Sub grade connection to convention center

The overall design approach reflects an appropriate level of contemporary thinking while respecting the undeniable architectural traditions of our nation’s capital. The hotel itself even incorporates an adjacent historic building that is re purposed as unique guestrooms for the larger hotel.

    2.  A Focus on Community: Mixed-Use developments offer residents and tenants the ability to engage in cultural activities as an integral part of daily life. The modern mixed-use development offers a contemporary character, yet combined with traditional regional touches. This merger creates creates a holistic sense of place for the community.

    3. Walkability: This is an important aspect of any mixed-use development. Pedestrian links at the plaza level and sometimes below grade should be carefully designed to connect all of the retail, parking and commercial business zones. Districts will should be designed to maximize opportunities for walking and transit use through mixed-use and pedestrian-oriented planning.

Project Spotlight: Swarovski Lighting Showroom


SwarovskiPhoto005The new showroom design puts two distinct lighting brands, Swarovski and Schonbek, under a unified branded environment. It was important that each brand retain its distinct character yet be unified in the same space.

“The challenge of the project was to develop a showroom space that effectively showcased two distinct brands under a unified environment.” said  tvsdesign Senior Associate, Matthew Hayner. “Our design team determined that the most common denominator between the brands was the faceted geometry of the crystals“.

As part of the showroom design, key design solutions and details include the following:

  • A faceted design language was established that occurs throughout the space, referencing the client’s crystal expertise and providing unifying design elements.
  • A striking yet neutral palette provides a dramatic backdrop for the wide variety of crystal light fixtures that are showcased through the space.
  • Client manufactured architectural materials were highlighted throughout the space as key features to further support the branding of the space and showcase the breadth of crystal expertise. SwarovskiPhoto003
  • A critical design component in the space was the design of the custom ceiling clouds that showcase the client’s crystal light fixtures. Fixture displays are constantly changing in the space and the clouds were designed to support evolving display and electrical requirements.
  • Custom retail display elements were designed and highlighted with color and placement. These display elements are available for customer display use across the country.

The new space highlights and supports the client’s brand identity and products and has brought new energy and increased attendance to their showroom.

Bringing a New Retail Experience to Mohali, India

North-Country-Mall.002The North Country Mall is a mixed use retail prototype and the first of potentially 40 rollout malls in India, introducing a new shopping experience to the region and its’ culture.

“Gumberg’s strategy is to develop about 20 regional and super regional malls across India over the next 6-7 years,” Anantharaman says. “Initial concentration is in top 12 markets with the greatest potential.”

The North Country Mall, now approximately 4 months away from opening, is rated one of the best upcoming malls in India, having attracted several high-end tenants to the shopping center. The mall is pre‐leased more than 80 percent of its 280 outlets to prominent international retailers.

Spotlight On: Bhendi Bazaar Redevelopment

Bhendi Bazaar Redevelopment

South Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazaar is undergoing its’ first major cluster redevelopment project to bring an eco-friendly transformation to the 200-year-old market.

Overcrowding, lack of maintenance, negligible investment in the infrastructure have led to a steady erosion of the fabric of Bhendi Bazaar. Today, residents and shoppers inhabit dilapidated buildings and conduct their daily lives on streets that lack even the most basic urban amenities such as sidewalks, drainage, benches, trees and lighting.

tvsdesign was selected via an international competition to design a redevelopment plan for the neighborhood, providing modern residential units and shops for all existing residents and businesses as close as possible to their current location; and utilizing 20% of the neighborhood’s land for income generating residential and commercial properties that would subsidize the redevelopment effort.

tvsdesign’s Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment plan will “rethink and revaluate what already exists” on the current site. Along with building and upgrading the architectural elements of the site to be visually and sustainably appealing, there is an expectation to upgrade the district to both inspire and engage people – a growing architectural trend in urban areas around the world.

A Look Inside the Cedar Rapids Convention Center


ABC’s Cedar Rapids gives a first look inside construction at The Cedar Rapids Convention Center, schedule to open in June of this year.

“Many people are going to believe it’s brand new because, for most intents and purposes, it is brand new,” said Steven Bauer of Frew Development Group during a site tour on Thursday of the complex. He pointed out the new arena seats already in place, wider and brighter concession areas and the upcoming installation of video boards. Bauer also said most of the system work has been completed.

“It’s actually a very well-orchestrated ballet and construction, just like many types of trades, relies on sequence,” said Bauer.

Celebrating Atlanta’s Rich History and Vibrant Future

Celebrating Atlanta

At every turn, Atlanta’s rich history is revealed through the Architecture and, Planning and Urban Design that grew this settlement into an international city.

The Georgia World Congress Center District began with the development of the Omni Arena, which was replaced by the Phillips Arena in 1999, the Omni International (now CNN Center) and the initial phase of the Georgia World Congress Center in the mid-1970s. Though it developed incrementally in subsequent years with additions to the World Congress Center and construction of the Georgia Dome, it was the 1996 Olympic Games that injected the energy and resources into the area to make it the exciting, active area it is now.

Beginning with the Omni International, the Omni Arena, and the initial Georgia World Congress Center building, over the past 40+ years, tvsdesign has been both planner and designer for most of the venues in the district. These facilities taken together represent more than 5 million square feet of enclosed space not including outdoor venues. The whole campus is in excess of 200 acres.

Galaxy Mall: China’s Newest Retail Destination


P-03408-000-001tvsdesign, celebrates the opening of Galaxy Mall, the retail portion of the Tianjin’s prestigious new Cultural Center District, which opened in October of 2012.  With 360,000 square meters of total building area, Galaxy Mall ranks among the top five largest retail complexes in China, and is more than 80 percent leased.

Awarded the project upon winning an government sponsored international design competition in 2009, our team conceived of a commercial complex located on the northern edge of the cultural district arranged around a large central lake. The complex opens out to the cultural activities and pedestrian flow of the grand promenade linking the grand Theater and Opera House to the east and the museums, art gallery and library to the south. The central lake extends into the retail site as the water feature flows down a dramatic waterfall and into the below grade retail.Galaxy Mall in Tianjin Le Yuan Commercial Complex was designed by tvsdesign and TADI (Tianjin, China). The built project completely expresses the original design intention of the master planning, perfectly blended into the whole atmosphere of the cultural center, expresses the strong capability of the design team to handle super commercial complex architectural design.

“We had the opportunity and the responsibility to create a retail project that would be seen and experienced as an integral piece of the city’s new cultural landmark,“ said tvsdesign Principal, Mark Carter“It demanded a combination of a respectful, sophisticated architecture and a dynamic shopping experience“.

Washington Convention Center Hosts the Inaugural Balls

In preparation for the festivities surrounding President Obama’s second inauguration, the Washington Convention Center was transformed into a three-story party place for tens of thousands of party-attendees.

The top floor was reserved for the Commander in Chief Ball for members of the military, the only place where  the presidential seal was displayed.

One floor down hosts some of the performers at the public inaugural ball, including Alicia Keys, Brad Paisley, Fun., members of the Glee cast, John Legend and many more.

Down on the bottom floor, there are three continuous halls, about 473,000 square feet. It was standing room as thousands of inaugural ball ticket buyers waited to catch a glimpse of the first couple.

The Washington Convention Center was designed to offer authentic experiences unique to its location location – Grand architectural gestures linked together more intimate gathering spots for the President’s guests last night.
